NO. 1 – PHILOSOPHY OF ISLAND LIVING

Top 10 Islands to Go in October

October is one of the best months for island travel: the Mediterranean retains warm sea temperatures after summer crowds fade, the Canary Islands are reliably sunny, and a small set of Caribbean islands offers lower hurricane exposure. The key is to choose selectively—much of the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and the Indian Ocean is still in transition.

For October, avoid treating every tropical island as interchangeable. Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao are more defensible Caribbean choices because they lie south of the main hurricane belt; elsewhere in the region, hurricane risk remains part of trip planning. In Greece and Italy, keep hotels and restaurants openings in mind—larger islands such as Crete, Rhodes and Sicily remain much more viable late in the season than smaller, highly seasonal islands.

Best by October mood

  • Best Mediterranean beach-and-culture trip: Crete — swim, visit archaeological sites, eat superbly and drive through dramatic landscapes without July–August intensity.
  • Best reliable beach weather: Tenerife — probably the safest choice for European travellers wanting warm days and an uncomplicated October sun holiday.
  • Best for an easy Caribbean escape: Aruba — it sits outside the main hurricane belt and is among the strongest October beach choices in the region.
  • Best for reef time: Bonaire — choose it for exceptional shore snorkelling and diving, with less resort bustle than neighbouring Aruba.
  • Best for wildlife and value: Galápagos — dry-season conditions, cool air, fewer visitors and potential cruise savings suit travellers who care more about nature than hot-water swimming.
  • Best for an active, scenic escape: Madeira — walking, gardens, food and coastlines are at their best when the island has softened from summer but remains comfortably mild.
Island / archipelago Country / region Why October works Best experience
Crete Greece Warm days, sea temperatures around 22–23°C, harvest-season food and sharply lower crowds make Crete one of Europe’s best October islands. Beaches, archaeology, food and road trips
Rhodes Greece The Dodecanese stays warmer later than much of Greece, with beach-friendly weather, historic towns and quieter resorts. Sun, swimming and medieval history
Tenerife Canary Islands, Spain Expect roughly 22–27°C, 7–8 hours of daily sun and ample choice in beaches, resort stays, hiking and whale watching. Reliable warmth and varied activity
Lanzarote Canary Islands, Spain Warm, dry-ish weather and volcanic landscapes make this excellent for coastal walks, cycling, wine country and relaxed beach days. Landscape, design and active travel
Madeira Portugal The late-season shoulder period brings mild warmth, subtropical gardens and superb walking before winter rain becomes more established. Levada walks, gardens, food and coastlines
Aruba Dutch Caribbean Far south of the main hurricane belt, Aruba is one of the Caribbean’s safer October bets for dry, warm beach weather. Straightforward beach time and families
Bonaire Caribbean Netherlands Another ABC island outside the main hurricane belt, with excellent shore snorkelling and a quieter, more reef-focused feel than Aruba. Snorkelling, diving and low-key travel
Curaçao Caribbean Netherlands Warm water, Dutch-Caribbean towns, diving and a position south of the typical hurricane track create one of October’s more dependable Caribbean options. Culture, beach clubs and diving
Galápagos Islands Ecuador October is cool, dry and low-crowd, with water around 21–22°C; it is especially rewarding for wildlife-first trips and can offer better-value cruises. Wildlife, expedition cruising and hiking
Sicily Italy Daytime temperatures typically remain around 20–24°C and the sea retains summer warmth, while food, wine and historic sites are more enjoyable without peak-season heat. Food, culture, coastal drives and beach days
